Encompassing Health Care Law-Legal Considerations, HealthCare Informatics and Health Care Ethics

 

Health Informatics Curriculum

  • The Health Informatics (HI) core curriculum integrates fundamental informatics and management concepts applied to the health care environment.
  • The HealthCare Informatics prepares Nurse and medical professional who manage, analyze, disseminate, and apply information to enhance wellness and quality of life for individuals and communities.
  • The program provides a comprehensive and integrated education experience Encompassing Health Care Law-Legal Considerations, HealthCare Informatics and Health Care Ethics
  • Program Participants will manage information of health care organizations, public health agencies, health data organizations, research institutes and private industries. The Health Informatics (HI) core curriculum integrates fundamental informatics and management concepts applied to the health care environment.

Foundation Courses: 
Candidates must complete two foundation seminar courses:

  • HealthCare Legal Issues- How to Stay Out of the Courtroom
  • Health Care Ethics – Professional Liability-What Do I need to know

Course Descriptions:
Introduction to Health Informatics ( 32 hrs)
This Course will examine clinical, research, and administrative applications of information systems in health services delivery. This course provides an introduction to important topics in informatics, including clinical data (collection, storage, and management), electronic medical record systems, decision support systems, computerized order entry, telemedicine, and consumer applications.

Introduction to Informatics Day 001 - Basic Concepts
The course deals with the nature of Informatics within the information technology space. The core concept of integration of people, technology and information will be addressed. The emphasis will be on the practical dimension of Informatics, real problems, and the socio-economic situations in which they arise. A variety of Informatics tools will be presented from a variety of domains, and their implications for science, engineering, art, the humanities and society will be discussed.

Introduction to HealthCare Informatics Day 002
Introduces the fields of informatics within the healthcare sector. Emphasizes core concept of the integration of people, technology and information. Focuses on the applications of informatics within healthcare delivery settings, from hospitals to provider offices to long-term care facilities to the home care setting. Informatics domains in various healthcare fields are presented, and changes in healthcare practice due to technology integration and deployment are highlighted.

Introduction to Informatics Day 003 Information Infrastructures
Basic concepts of computing and network hardware. Software architecture of information systems. Basic concepts of systems and applications programming. Fundamental programming constructs, including loops, arrays, classes, and files. General problem-solving techniques. Building secure and reliable information infrastructures.

Foundation Courses: 
Candidates must complete two foundation seminar courses on line

Health Care Law (8 hrs) 
This is a survey course of the law as it affects health care administration and the delivery of health care generally. The course will touch on many legal subjects including professional and institutional liability, provider - patient relationships, transactional and structural issues of the health care delivery system, and individual rights.

Health Care Ethics (8 hrs) 
This seminar is designed for professionals in the health professions and related disciplines who are seeking to develop skills and a working knowledge of health ethics and how to respond when confronted by ethical dilemmas in the clinical and organizational setting. A seminar and discussion format will be used to introduce rigorous thinking and discussion about both theoretical and applied aspects of ethics within multiple professions concerned with health care to enable students to develop an overview of ethical theory, the historical development of bioethics as a discipline, and the application of health ethics in professional life. Critical thinking, writing, and group discussion will be encouraged.

  • 40GB hard drive (60GB or higher preferred)
  • SVGA (1024 x 768 or higher) display
  • Full duplex sound card with speakers/headphones and microphone
  • Windows operating system, Windows XP or higher recommended
  • High-speed Internet connection through an ISP account or network; cable, DSL or satellite high-speed access required. (Dial-up Internet connection is NOT acceptable for this program)

Software

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
  • Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher for access to Tegrity presentations
  • Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (or higher to include MS-Office Access)
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 or higher
  • Additional course specific applications
